The Angola demographic outlook
With roughly 39.6 million people as of 2026, Angola ranks 40th in the world by population. In Middle Africa, where it lies, that future is driven by fertility, longevity and the movement of people across its borders. It packs in roughly 32 people per square kilometre.
The defining marker in Angola's future is its peak, expected around 2100 at about 149 million. After that the population eases back toward 149 million by 2100, having passed through 73.5 million at mid-century. It is projected to pass the 100 million mark around 2067.
With about 5.05 births per woman, Angola still has one of the higher fertility rates in the world, driving fast expansion.
The median age is set to climb from about 17 today to roughly 32 by 2100, even as life expectancy improves from about 65 years. For now it remains one of the world's youngest populations, with a large generation about to reach working age. A rising median age means fewer working-age people supporting each retiree over time.
The trajectory above is the UN's medium scenario. Wars, policy shifts, economic change and migration can all move the numbers, but the broad shape, growth followed by an eventual peak, is robust across the main variants.
